Those who are interested in peculiarities of owl design may find the
following paper very interesting:
http://www.cs.man.ac.uk/~horrocks/Publications/download/2003/HoPH03a.pdf
This paper is an account of the design choices and trade-offs that went
into the making of OWL and it could be especially interesting for those
of us who are doing design. It is more philosophical than technical.
Page 5 contains excellent light weight (1 page) introduction to
semantics, that could be useful in an ecoinformatic course for non
Computer Scientists. Section 6.2 presents the most explanatory example
of inconsistency of owl and rdf. Under certain angle this work can be
regarded as a log of subtle political struggle inside W3C with elements
of comedy and tragedy. This view adds certain entertainment component to
the reading of the paper. I hope you will enjoy reading it.
