Dear All,
Please join us April 5th:
*"Society and nature in regional and national U.S. news coverage of
climate change: visual framing of a global environmental issue"**?*
*Dr. Stacy Rebich Hespanha, NCEAS***
From Dr. Rebich Hespanha:
News media play a powerful role in disseminating information and shaping
public opinion on environmental issues. Choices made by the creators and
distributors of news media not only influence public perception about
which issues are important, but also surreptitiously lead consumers of
these media to perceive certain aspects of or perspectives on an issue
while neglecting to consider other aspects or perspectives. My work
focuses on documenting and examining themes and frames presented in news
coverage of global climate change. This work is based on a corpus of
approximately 90,000 news stories about the issue that were published or
broadcast in the U.S. between 1969 and late 2009. I will briefly
describe insights gained through algorithmic text mining of the
documents in the corpus, and then will focus primarily on preliminary
qualitative results of a content analysis of 350 images that appeared
with randomly-selected newspaper and magazine articles from the corpus.
Research has shown that images are very powerful framing devices, and
this discussion will examine how the use of imagery in print news has
served to position climate change within public and private arenas and
to emphasize particular geographic, political, scientific,
technological, sociological, and ideological aspects of the issue.
