This came in today from the Edinburgh e-science center, it sounds like just what we need to extract concepts from online literature!

INVITATION

The National Centre for Text Mining Seminar Series

The National Centre for Text Mining (http://www.nactem.ac.uk) will be holding a series of seminars addressing various aspects of Text Mining and associated fields (http://www.nactem.ac.uk/Seminars/). These will be held at the University of Manchester, usually on a Friday at 2:00pm.

For our first seminar we are delighted to welcome Dr David Milward, the CTO of Linguamatics Ltd, who will be giving a presentation entitled:

"Interactive Information Extraction for the Life Sciences".

ABSTRACT:

Interactive Information Extraction brings together search and
information extraction to provide fast, interactive text mining over
large volumes of text such as Medline abstracts, full text scientific articles, patents etc. Linguamatics' I2E System is the first system of this kind. As well as covering the two ends of the spectrum: keyword
search over documents, and detailed linguistic patterns within
sentences, I2E also covers the points in between such as keywords within the same sentence, or co-occurrence of biological entities within
sentences or documents. In this talk I will describe how I2E is being used in the life sciences in areas such as safety, discovery and
business intelligence. I will also describe the use of ontologies within the system, and how statistical and linguistic processing can be
combined to provide high quality results. The talk will include a
demonstration of the software.

This will be held on Friday the 28th of October at 2:00 pm in the E7 lecture theatre in the Renold Building. It is marked as no 8 in the
campus map that may be found at the university Maps and Travel webpage http://www.manchester.ac.uk/visitors/travel/, along with details of how to find us. The easiest way to find E7 is to take the lift to E floor and turn right upon leaving the lift, which will take you straight to the lecture theatre.
