Subject: draft outline for Feb 2005 meeting

Okay how about this for a working outline regarding usability for the
Feb
2005 meeting .....

Usability activities for small representative user group of providers of
taxonomic data (preferably 5 or more):
-Prior to their arrival at the workshop, ask them to rank and describe
their top 3 problems/issues -Prior to their arrival at the workshop, ask
them to describe the top 3 features they would like to see in an
application -at the workshop, present the results of both activities --
facilitate the exercise of having the group then prioritize the
problems/issues and then map the "wishlist" activities that might help
solve the problems and also brainstorm about other solutions -possibly
discuss the formation of user steering committee (we may not want to do
this until we have discussed things with the Taxon working group
first)

Usability activities for the SEEK Taxon group -brainstorm and discuss
assumptions about the various user communities (right now we are
assuming two communities -- users of taxonomic data and providers of
taxonomic data) -- this will provide the basis for developing a user
profile instrument; assumptions can include things like demographics,
roles, goals, tasks, technology usage and familiarity, current tools,
current processes etc -as a group activity, construct a user/task matrix
-discuss the formation and use of a user steering committee to help
drive requirements and make decisions -discuss "day-in-the-life" field
studies -discuss feedback methods
-- design sessions and paper prototype testing with the user
      steering committee
-- software prototype testing with a larger group of users - plan
when
these might be done (opportunities where users are gathered if
possible such as conferences or other large user meetings)
-- remote usability testing that is somewhat self-directed -discuss
polling the wider user community about the 12 application ideas the SEEK
team has developed -- topics could include asking users whether they
agree with the list (add/delete ideas), then have them rank the
applications. This, along with observations we do in the field, will
help us decide which apps to work on and in what order.

Sounds good to me. I can write up a general outline of the
proposed
activities and discussion items that we talked about this
morning and email
it to you. Then we can discuss things and finalize and maybe
email out to
the Taxon group before the call?

	Laura --

My mistake - the call is a week from Friday on the 14th. Given
that in the
meantime, yu and I should probably go to plan B and come up with
a roughed
out written plan/outline and I will start contacting potential
users to
	come. Sound OK?

	        Laura --

The SEEK Taxon teleconference call this week is at 9:00
AM on
Friday. Yikes. Does that conflict with your dentist appointment?
If yes, I
will change the call time if we can get you for 30-45 minutes on
the call.
If that is a conflict what other times (your local time) would
work, if any,
	for you on Friday?

Thanks so much, I understand that is your day off.
