    Yes, you can use a global land use map if you don't have more
   specific land cover data. The result will only give you a very general
   idea of the carbon storage, so it would be best to look for a more
   detailed and current map. There are several global land cover maps out
   there, here are two: http://glcf.umiacs.umd.edu/data/landcover/
   http://bioval.jrc.ec.europa.eu/products/glc2000/products.php Once you
   get the global landcover map, you can use Spatial Analyst's Extract by
   Mask to clip it down to just the area that you're interested in. ~
