[ecoinfo] Gazetteer standards

Hi All,

I am formalizing our research site gazetteer.  Are there interoperability
standards I should consider?  General best practices and suggested
readings?  Any pan-organizational site databases that I should know about
beforehand?  

All suggestions appreciated.
