POSITION
SUMMARY: The qualified individual will manage and maintain the
integrated scientific, network, and system databases for the Long Term
Ecological Research Project (LTER) Network Office, ensuring consistency
and integrity of data; overseeing collection, processing, and security;
designs and creates databases, and participates in testing and
implementation of new sever side applications and/or enhancements and
modifications to existing systems; provides assistance and training to
system users; coordinates the collection of data with the LTER Network
data managers from other projects.
The expanding role of data and information management in ecological
research, plus the commitment of the Department of Biology and its
research components to the support of state-of-the-art computer
resources, creates opportunities or professional development in this
position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree; at least 2 years of experience that
is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
OR
Successful completion of at least 60 college-level credit hours; at
least 4 years of experience that is directly related to the duties and
responsibilities specified.
OR
High school diploma or GED; at least 6 years of experience that is
directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
PREFERRED
QUALIFICATIONS:
* Experience:
o With database construction, management, and retrieval
methods in modern database management systems (e.g., MS SQL Server,
MySQL, Oracle)
o Maintaining extant databases and on-line information
systems including routine curation activities, logging, backup,
verification, quality assurance checks and security
o Establishing and maintaining user account databases in
Linux and Windows operating system including profile configurations and
security
o Experience maintaining request tracker databases for
technical support, concurrent versioning systems for software
development, email list servers, running under Linux operating systems
o Experience in analyzing operational data requirements for
ecological datasets and to create and develop databases specific to
requirements
* Experience providing technical assistance and training in the use
of personal computers, standard software packages, and on-line
information systems running on a variety of platforms including UNIX and
MS Windows variants
* Experience in building, configuring and maintaining server side
software for Linux including web servers, mail transfer agents, database
servers, and LDAP servers
* Experience programming in languages used for web application
development such as:
o Perl
o PHP
* Excellent writing skills as demonstrated by the cover letter and
