Abstract:
News media play a fundamental role in forming public understanding
of and attitudes about climate change. Journalists and news
organizations have been the subject of increasing scrutiny for
their role in the American public’s lack of engagement with and
skepticism about climate issues. One aim of my research is to
paint a broad picture of how climate change has been represented
in news media over the past several decades, and I use algorithmic
text processing and visualization approaches to create
representations of dominant themes in climate news. I will
present results of an analysis of approximately 90,000 newspaper
and magazine articles, TV and radio transcripts, and web blogs.
This presentation will focus on how dominant themes in climate
change news have changed and developed over the history of
communication about the issue.
