Please join us for this week's Ecolunch seminar on Thursday, April 17th
at 12:15 p.m. It is titled:
Can This Relationship be Saved? Bridging the Worlds of Science and
Journalism
Reporters need plain talk. Scientists need caveats. Reporters need
overviews. Scientists need details. You get the idea.
While scientists play a critical role both as a resource for journalists
and as a valuable information source for the public, they are often
frustrated with how their work is portrayed in the press. Nancy Baron,
COMPASS Outreach Director, will explain the fundamental differences
between the cultures of science and journalism and give some pointers on
how scientists can communicate more effectively. This ecolunch will
provide practical advice for interacting with reporters, and tips for
honing your own interview skills. This session provides suggestions for
engaging with print, broadcast and electronic journalism professionals
to achieve positive, effective results.
Special guests include:
ANNA DAVISON – Freelance Journalist
Anna Davison is a freelance science writer and editor. She trained as a
biologist in New Zealand, then abandoned the lab to work in
environmental policy. She came to the United States to do a grad program
in science writing and has since worked as a writer and editor at the
Monterey County Herald and the Santa Barbara News-Press. She began
freelancing a year ago and writes for New Scientist and Technology Review.
MICHAEL TODD – Online Editor, Miller-McCune.com
Michael Todd is online editor of Miller-McCune.com, the web news site of
the Miller-McCune Center for Research, Media and Public Policy. Most of
his 25-year career has been spent in newspaper journalism, including
stints at papers in the Marshall Islands and tiny California farming
communities. Before joining the center, he was managing editor of the
national magazine Hispanic Business.
