The Ptolemy Matlab interface has similar problems, I'm looking at building
64bit 
libraries for the Mac.  On the Mac, one can have universal libraries that
support
both 32 and 64 bit (and presumably x86 and ppc).  On the Mac, the lipo command
is what is used to build univeral libraries.
