It's like having a play/pause button on a music player.  Stopwatches usually
have a start/stop button.  In my mind, it's a little like an on/off switch. 
I'm not actually sure I could think of a search function that has a cancel
option, let alone one with a search/cancel button.  The thought was really
which set of buttons to give double duty.  We currently have cancel/reset, but
the cancel/search behavior are mutually exclusive complements.

We might be able to get rid of the reset button entirely by putting the search
results in the "All Ontologies and Folders" tree.  That way, if you want to
dismiss the search results, you just fold the search results branch.  Your
original browsed tree never goes away, so you never need to call it back.  In
that case, the only useful reset button might be to close up the tree after the
user has opened up a ton of branches.

All that being said, the thing works and looks fine.  The rest is polish and
some personal preference, so it's really less important.
