Possibly these questions fall under the general rubric of "semantic 
mediation" about which a fair bit of research has been published 
recently, including, for biodiversity data concerns, by SEEK-SMS in a 
sister project to SEEK-Taxon. Perhaps we could (ahem) seek enlightenment...
