wrt recent discussion about interpolation techniques.  The Open 
Geospatial Consortium has a fairly readable document describing the 
different mechanisms and approaches for interpolation of raster data

There's also a bunch of other relevant docs on the opengeospatial site, 
so it's worth poking around.
