    I'm sorry this is happening to you. I've been doing a lot of testing
   with ArcMap 9.3.1 and 10 for the next release and have been running
   into a lot of mystery problems (like raster attribute tables not being
   created and output files not being able to be created) that usually
   disappear when I simply restart ArcMap. Your flow direction problem
   might be a raster attribute issue, which I hope I've worked around in
   the next version (and I can tell you how to work around it too, if
   restarting Arc doesn't fix it.) ~ Stacie
