Hi all -
A while back, I sent the below message, about research.gov accepting
bibtex files. I was particularly interested in transformed-EML, but my
experience will be of interest to someone creating NSF-bibtex from any
system (eg, DEIMS exports bibtex.)
The NSF software constrains the bibtex fields it will accept. This is no
surprise, and one could probably discern them with enough dogged trial
and error. I chose a different route -- I contacted the NSF help-system
(needed to make a point that day, I guess). It took a little wait-time,
but my questions did finally reach someone in a developer role.
I asked 2 questions:
1) Will you provide an explicit list of the bibtex fields that
research.gov can ingest for each citation-type?
2) Our database contains other ancillary data, some specifically for NSF
reports. These include:
publication identifier and type (most commonly these are DOIs)
status of publication (published | accepted | awaiting publication |
submitted | under review | other)
peer reviewed (boolean)
federal support (boolean)
How can I label these in our database output so that they can be
ingested automatically along with the citation itself?
The answer to #1 is posted on the LTER IM website
http://im.lternet.edu/bibliography/nsf_report_bibtex (under "IM
Practices"). Anyone producing an NSF-bibtex file from any database will
need this. I haven't tested this list with our citations yet, but will
adapt my code next week. I wanted to get this info distributed ASAP in
case anyone else needs it. I'll accumulate other notes and gotcha's on
that same webpage.
The answer to #2 is simple: You can't, and don't look for that feature
anytime soon.
Submitters have to manually enter those data through the UI. After the
bibtex file is uploaded you see each citation with a group of check
boxes and drop-downs. And important: no citations are uploaded till the
required info is supplied, so be prepared to work through the whole
bibtex-list in one sitting (non-optional parts).
But at least now I know how to organize our DB output to ease the burden
for the person doing the inputs.
You can test your bibtex files at:

Hi all -
I just heard that report.gov will accept lists of citations for annual
reports in BibTeX format. This ought to help streamline submissions from
LTER sites.
SBC LTER's citations are in EML, so we'll need a eml2bibtex stylesheet
sometime this summer. I haven't looked closely at the format yet, but I
think it will be a variation of what I already use for eml2endnote. Is
anyone interested in collaborating on this? or better yet, does one
already exist?
best,
Margaret

Subject: NSF Releases Video Tutorial on Research.gov’s BibTeX Feature
To: Jenny Dugan<jenny.dugan at lifesci.ucsb.edu>
Colleagues,
On Wednesday, May 21, NSF released a video tutorial on Research.gov’s
feature to capture citations in annual and final project reports through
the uploading of a BibTeX file. This tutorial walks awardees through the
creation and uploading process of a BibTeX file to a project report via
Research.gov. To view the tutorial, visit the Research.gov Project
Reporting page
<http://www.research.gov/research-portal/appmanager/base/desktop?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=research_page_n_about_por>or
<http://www.research.gov/common/attachment/Desktop/aboutprojectreportsbibtextutorial2.htm?wtlink=Research.gov%20Test%20Page>.
The Research.gov BibTeX video tutorial is one in a series of tutorials
that NSF is releasing to help awardees. This past February, NSF released
the Project Reporting video tutorial
<http://www.research.gov/common/attachment/Desktop/aboutprojectreportstutorial.htm>,
which highlights the process and tools available to complete and submit
a project report.
We hope that you find these tutorials helpful. If you have any
questions, please contact us atfeedback at research.gov
<mailto:feedback at research.gov>.
Sincerely,
The Research.gov Team at the National Science Foundation
