David,
I agree with Tim. I'm still working on this, but I'm not making a
simplistic 1:1 map based on units for the same reason he cites.
As a first step I'm trying to create a multiple-criteria lookup table
based on units and my classifications for data type (storage type),
variable type (semantic type), numerical type
(continuous/discrete/angular/none) and the EML measurementScale and
corresponding sub-elements. If that proves too awkward or problematic to
automate I may just have to resort to adding a second eml-centric
numerical classification system for attributes and doing a one time
conversion for our existing data sets.
