*Scientific Programming and Informatics Support Position at NCEAS*

The National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, a research 
center affiliated with the University of California, Santa Barbara, has 
an opening for a Scientific Programmer/Analyst.

* Duties*: Consults with and advises National Center for Ecological 
Analysis and Synthesis researchers as to powerful, efficient, and 
appropriate computational approaches and tools for implementing their 
scientific investigations and archiving their analytical products and 
data. Assists target groups in accomplishing analyses by developing, 
testing, and deploying custom-developed solutions using advanced 
quantitative tools and database technologies. Works with technologists 
to coordinate developing codebase and datasets into a generalized 
resource for ecological researchers.

*Minimum Requirements*: Specialist in scientific programming and 
quantitative analyses with extensive experience with ecological and 
environmental data, databases and concepts. Expert capability using 
high-end scientific software solutions on Unix, Linux and Windows 
machines. Advanced knowledge of statistical procedures and tests; 
database modeling, implementation and management; analysis of time 
series and spatially explicit data; scientific data visualization; 
modeling of populations and ecosystems; and the software tools needed 
for accomplishing these tasks. Strong knowledge in MATLAB, SAS, SPLUS, 
and Mathematica, including expert facility with data processing and 
manipulation of these packages; and SQL/Oracle, PostgreSQL and XML. 
Excellent communication skills. Ability to quickly learn and adapt a 
skill set to rapidly changing quantitative methodologies and advances in 
information technologies.
Desirable: Advanced programming skills in one or more of C, C++, 
FORTRAN, and Java. Familiarity with implementing advanced numerical 
algorithms in these languages (e.g., Numerical Recipes, NAG, IMSL). 
Knowledge of parallel  processing techniques (MPI). Experience with GIS 
and remote-sensing techniques and software. Advanced degree in a 
quantitative field of study.

Special Conditions: Position located in downtown Santa Barbara, 
California, at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis.

Job Number: 2003-08-027           Salary: $4,072 - $5,704/mo.
